Ecology

There are four distinct ecosystems at Deer Grove Forest Preserves:  woodlands, savannas, prairies, and wetlands.   The are pretty much the same ecosystems that are common across the Chicago region (we fondly call it the Chicago Wilderness).

Each ecosystem hosts a distinct set up wildlife and plants.  Click on the headings below to learn more.

We use herbicide judiciously and carefully to minimize any collateral damage to native plants and animals.  Often we are applying herbicides to individual plants (e.g. basel barking).  If spraying, we do it carefully.

  • Any volunteer that herbicides must get a Illinois Department of Agriculture pesticide/herbicide license.  This is a rigorous course.  (the Forest Preserve will pay for volunteers to take this testing.
  • In addition, the Forest Preserve conducts it own training in invasive plant ID and  safe use of  herbicides in the preserves.

Volunteers can make a huge contribution to restoring native ecoystems by learning the safe and appropriate use of herbicides in restoration.  Talk to your steward if you would like to participate in this important work.
