Deer Grove consists of two preserves- Deer Grove West (DGW) and Deer Grove East (DGE).
Deer Grove West is the first Forest Preserve in the United States (est. 1916). It is located west of Quentin Road between Dundee Road and Lake Cook Road. It is an Illinois Nature Preserve—an indication of a high quality natural ecosystem. It is a 1,000 acre matrix of woodlands and wetlands along with a scenic lake and picnic areas. In spring and fall, Deer Grove West is one of the most scenic areas in all of Cook County.
Deer Grove East is located on the East Side of Quentin road. Historically, DGE was farmed for more than a century. Only recently has it been restored to a beautiful mosaic of prairies, savannas, wetlands and woodlands. During the summer, walking through Deer Grove East will provide an ever changing color pallet of blooming flowers.
